I love the compatibility setting "Expand word space on lines with manual line breaks in justified 
paragraphs" - and want to have it unchecked in general. Sadly, when I uncheck it, quit OOO, my setting is 
lost at the next relaunch, and I have to uncheck it again.

It doesnt matter, if I hit the "use as standard" button.

This is a paragraph format, this is not persistent like a view option. It is
only saved in the current document.
If you want it in every new document you have to define a new default Writer
template. If you do not now how to, have a look in the help, the support pages
or ask on users@openoffice.org for support.
