in rev609, in the word processor pressing the quotation key (") shows up as a
question mark (?). obviously this would seem like it might be an issue with the
X server config, but all othe applications work fine. this is perfectly
repeatable for me, and happens every time i start openoffice.

You see a question mark because OO is unable to display the character that has 
been chosen for replacement of double quotes.
Check (via menu) Tools-AutoCorrect/Autoformat-Tabpage "Custom Quotes" and switch 
it off or use a character/symbol that your system can display

As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved duplicate
issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is
unfortunately to set them to verified.
