In ALL OpenOffice applications (writer, math, draw, impress, calculator, and 
database), it would be very helpful if we could choose the default unit of 
measurement as either inches or metric.

You can select that unit under menu 'Tools -> Options -> OOo Writer -> General
-> Settings -> Measurement unit' (here for WRITER).
I doubt that cÃ¼u checked with 1.0.0
