Normally when you open the Character style dialog the dialog will open in the
last used tab. This is ok in most cases. 

But if you use the language selector in the status bar (click and select
'more...') you should always open the Font tab in that same dialog. In this
particular case anything else will confuse the user.

Status bar has no language selector.

The language field is there in Writer, and I think the request is valid, and it would indeed be useful when the dialog page "Font" is opened in this case.
