If a table is the whole width of the page, the UI for setting the column widths
(table format window, columns tab) becomes unusable. If one column is enlarged
by the user, another one (or several) is/are immediately automatically shrunk.
The user is never given a chance to complete a column layout that in which the
total widths of all the columns is acceptable. 

Perhaps the system should have an apply button or something similar to trigger
the system to check whether the user's input will fit, and let the user enter
widths without automatic corrections before?

The behavior of the current UI is identical in the MacOS X final beta.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".

This was replicated using this Writer on Windows 7 on 10/11/13. A table was created and the margins were set to the maximum page length. When the column widths were adjusted to a larger length, other columns in this feature would shrink and auto-adjust, making it difficult to set multiple custom column widths using this ui feature.

Table Properties - Columns - Remaining space -> can not accept values.
