A two page document summarizing an interview for my class

This is a problem relating to saving/exporting, but since that option wasn't available above, I went with the closest I could think of - Open/Importing.

I have run OOo on my Mac for over a year. It has been rock solid stable. Until 4 weeks ago. I encountered my first hang when trying to save a document. The hang was so severe I forced a shut down and rebooted my system. The hang only affected OOo Writer to my knowledge. I haven't used the other components in quite a while.

Here is what keeps happening, but seemingly at random.
Click on Save or Save As
  Save box opens up
I try select where I want to save it (non default location)
Save box disappears before I can even type in a document name or hit save.
Writer remains stuck for a very long period of time.
The Save dialogue box reappeared once after about 30 min, and I was able to finish saving my document.

This doesn't happen every time, but it seems to happen more often when I try to save my document to a non-standard location, such as Desktop\U Mary Classes\MGT 326\Session 3\Jonathan Musk-Paper3-Session3.odt.

The problem began prior to my making changes to the system. In fact, I didn't notice this problem until I started taking online classes and wanted to put all my files outside of the Documents folder. Previously, I only saved into the Documents folder and its subdirectories.

I am writing this during my 4th such hang up in 4 weeks, and as of right now OOo Writer has been hung for well over an hour. Here are the software changes I have made since my first hanging:
  1. Mac OSX 10.7.4 Lion, OOo 3.4.1, Mac Java 6u?? (unsure of which update. I try to stay on top of updates, but I don't know which one I had)
  2. Mac OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, OOo 3.4.1, Mac Java 6u?? (same)
  3. Mac OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, OOo 4.0.0, Mac Java 6u?? (same)
  4. Mac OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, OOo 4.0.0, Mac Java 7u25

Today I updated to Mac Java 7u40. But I haven't rebooted the system yet. I may have to switch word processors until this bug can get fixed. I have to be able to reliably type my documents.

Attached is the simple file I was working on when I had a crash and recovery.

I have since located the appropriate Save/Export box and changed it accordingly.

The problem only appears to happen during the initial Save/Save As attempt. Once the file has an established file path, the Save command seems to work just fine.

Also, in my attempts to force a shutdown a few minutes ago, OOo unhung and presented me with a the Save As dialogue box, which allowed me to save the file I was working on even though OOo ended up crashing after the file was saved. Evidently it came out of whatever loop it got stuck in.

This problem happens every time I try to save-as (establish a new location) from writer and calc. It only happens on my MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5, not with my Macbook 10.6.x

I can replicate the problem by opening ANY doc in writer or calc, going to file/save-as, and then double-clicking on a folder, whether it is a subfolder or parent folder, and then double-clicking on another parent/sub folder two more times.

I tried installing OO 3.4.1 and had the same experience.
