Description gvalladao 2014-02-18 08:44:07 UTC
1) put a footnote to a given text with Insert > Footnote/Endnote > Numbering: Character: ** > OK
2) save in *.doc format (does not occur if saved as *.odt)
3) reopen document: the second asterisk is there, but removed to the right, in the beginning of footnote text.

Also happens with endnotes.
Comment 1 aterbeek 2014-02-24 15:00:50 UTC
I was unable to replicate the bug described. The steps that I took were:

1) Opened Open Office Writer 4.0.1 in Windows 7

2) Typed some words into OO Writer.

3) Went to Insert--Footnote/Endnote. Changed the numbering to character and entered ** in the box to the right. For type, I first chose Footnote and then did Endnote. Clicked OK.

4) Another test that I did for the footnote/endnote was changing the numbering to character and entered **> in the box to the right. For type, I first chose Footnote and then did Endnote. Clicked OK.

5) Saved the documents as Footnote.odt and Footnote.doc for the Footnote and Endnote.odt and Endnote.doc for the Endnote. When choosing doc, I changed the save as type to .doc from the OO Writer. Also, when saving to .doc format, I chose the option to keep current format and not save in ODF format.

6) Retrieved all the documents and compared them. I didn't see any of the asteriks to the right. Both asteriks were in the same place prior to me saving my document for both footnote and endnote.

Attaching screenshots for the ** test.

Hello,

This is odd. When I open your attachments, aterbeek, footnote.doc and endnote doc.doc the asterisk does appear removed to the right on the note. Maybe this bug is exclusive to the mac version?
I attach the same test made by me with the result of the asterisk appearing removed to the right (that is, actually in the text area of the footnote). See if you also see it that way.

I have added 2 attachments for what I see when opening gvalladao's attachment.
Comment 11 gvalladao 2014-02-24 18:46:30 UTC
That is strange. Maybe we have to wait and see if someone with a Mac can reproduce the error.
Also I noticed that on my document the notes appear always on a grey background, which doesn't seem to be the case on aterbeek's screenshots.
I'm attaching screenshots of what I see.

I am unable to replicate this problem using AOO 4.0.1 using Mac OS 10.8.5.

My steps
1. Create a paragraph of lorem ipsum text.
2. Add footnote at end of paragraph (Insert-->Footnote) using ** as the numbering.
3. Save in Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format
4. Open .doc file in MS Word 2011.

The footnote number at the end of the paragraph appears to be in the proper place as does the number in the footnote at the bottom of the page.

See FootnoteAOOMac.png and FootnoteWordMac.png for screenshots of how this appears in OpenOffice Writer and MS Word 2011, respectively.

beckyfielder, I believe the footnote appears normally when opening in Word.
The point is to save it as .doc, close the file and reopen it in AOO.
See my screenshots.

I am now able to replicate the problem gvalladao reports on AOO 4.0.1 using Mac OS 10.8.5.

My steps
1. Create a paragraph of lorem ipsum text.
2. Add footnote at end of paragraph (Insert-->Footnote) using ** as the numbering.
3. Save in Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format
4. Open .doc file in AOO 4.0.1.

The second character in the footnote number is moved to the right by approximately one space.

This problem occurs with other special characters that are doubled (i.e. @@) as well as two special characters that are not repeated (i.e. &$)
Comment 19 Tomislav Delalic 2016-04-18 20:15:20 UTC
I was able to replicate the problem on the following configuration:

Windows 10

OpenOffice 4.2.0

Steps I followed:

1. Create a sample text (can be only one character)

2. Add footnote with ** as numbering

* Observe that the cursor is not placed just after the second *, but apparently inserts few blank spaces between ** and the cursor

3. Save the document as a .doc format

4. Open the saved document in OpenOffice

Observed behaviour:

Previously entered ** in the footnote now appear with few spaces between each * .

Spacing will happen even if you enter more than two characters and regardless of spaces between them and regardless of characters we use. Tested and reproduced with:

(place the following lines in step 2)

a. Insert four characters with one space between each of them

b. Insert two or more characters other than * (any character, including letters and numbers)

However, the space added after I did the initial insert of characters (step 2) asked for some followup tests:

1. Insert the footnote with ** characters

2. Delete the spaces added by the operation

3. Save the document as .doc

4. Open the saved document in OpenOffice

Observed behaviour:

Footnote is displayed as it was before saving, without blank spaces between * characters.

Another test in order to see if the same happens when editing the document:

1. Insert the footnote with ** characters

2. Delete the spaces added by the operation

3. Save the document as .doc

4. Open the saved document in OpenOffice and add space right after the two * characters

5. Close and reopen the document in OpenOffice

Observed behaviour:

Footnote is displayed as it was before saving, without blank spaces between * characters

Repeat the same, but using Word to modify the document:

1. Insert the footnote with ** characters

2. Delete the spaces added by the operation

3. Save the document as .doc

4. Open the saved document in Word and add space right after the two * characters

5. Close and reopen the document in OpenOffice

Observed behaviour:

Footnote is displayed as it was before saving, without blank spaces between * characters

From what it seems, the actual problem causing this behaviour might be:

The adding of two characters in a footnote for the first time adds blank spaces following them, that causes blank spaces to appear between characters afer saving it in a .doc format and reopening with OpenOffice
Comment 20 Ana Molina Paz 2019-11-14 04:48:34 UTC
OS: Windows 10
Version: OpenOffice 4.1.7

I have successfully reproduced this issue according to the steps provided

Steps:
1. Create a text.
2. Add footnote at end of paragraph (Insert-->Footnote) using ** as the numbering.
3. Save in Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format
4. Open .doc file
5. Repeat the steps 2 to 4 with other specials chars i.e. @@ &$

Actual Result:
* Observe that the cursor is not placed just after the second *, but apparently inserts few blank spaces between ** and the cursor

After Save
The second character in the footnote number is moved to the right by approximately one space.

This problem occurs with other special characters that are doubled (i.e. @@) as well as two special characters that are not repeated (i.e. &$), too
