Although you are seeing warnings about corruption in the history file,
the cvs history command is still functioning properly. The "invalid"
line is a warning and cvs will simply ignore that line. I have opened
an internal issue asking our engineer to analyze and repair the
history file.

But, when I ran the command I got the error but I also got this output:
cvs server: warning: history line 585065 invalid
O 2003-02-01 01:50 +0000 bnoble CVSROOT =CVSROOT= <remote>/*
O 2003-02-05 23:01 +0000 bnoble cvsroot =cvsroot= <remote>/*

Can you try the command again and report your results?
