The attached largish Excel file takes just 5 seconds to open in Excel 2007.  It's a large file, but completely usable on my machine and I don't notice any problems or slowness with it at all.  Yes, I have macros enabled.

On the same machine, it takes 3.5 HOURS to open in OpenOffice Calc -- about 2500 times slower.  It uses one core of the CPU at nearly 100% during that time.  Once it is open, it seems fine and behaves basically equivalently to running it in Excel.

I do not know what is special about the file that makes it so slow to open.  It is a file created by someone else for people to use for creating characters in Dungeons & Dragons.

I confirm that import is a very long process.
But AOO can't save in xlsm format.
So once done, you must save as ODS.
This file opens faster.
