Whilst the spellchecker allows you to add a new word e.g. "Hatton" to the user
dictionary, it does not recognise the new word the next time it is used. i.e.
it will keep prompting to change or add the word. I checked the dictionary and
the word had been added to it. So maybe the spell checker is just ignoring the
user dictionaries.

Same problem on two computers with XP.
Both "Add" and "Ignore all" functionality is not working.
