Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 15963
Autosave - overrides the user's file
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:37:06 UTC
Autosave overrides the user's file (i.e., saves on the same filename). Indeed, a backup can be saved, but if two autosaves were done, than this backup no longer has the originally saved data. There should be an option for a user to autosave with a different (maybe even hidden) filename, s.t. the original save made by the author is never altered, and the author can ALWAYS return to whatever he/she saved manually. P.S.: I can't be sure this is the correct place to file the bug, but anyway, I found it in simpress. I'd be grateful if anyone could reassign this bug to whereever it fits best.
Issue type changed to Feature.
Reassigned to Bettina.
Should Component be changed to Framework?

I think this is pretty important enhancement for the AutoSave feature. I have been using OpenOffice for almost 3 years now, but I still sometimes lose an original file because I opened it up to use as a template, then forget to save it to a new filename before autosave gets to it. I could set autosave to ask before saving, but that interrupts the flow of typing and gets very irritating. MS Office handles this by saving the document as a temporary hidden file, which I think makes a lot of sense. That way, the user's document is backed up, but we don't end up accidentally losing data (which is VERY frustrating). If using a hidden file is not feasible (due to hidden files being treated differently for different platforms), perhaps the temporary files could be placed in a working subdirectory in the OpenOffice directory which is designed just for this purpose.
This is an important issue and extremely annoying. If I have autosave on and save my data normally, next day I have 2 documents, my original and the autosaved one WITH THE SAME NAME!!! Many years ago already I suggested OpenOffice use the same system as WordPerfect: The original document keeps its original name and remains UNTAMPERED, and any autosaved documents get saved under another name or with another suffix.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
