Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 17039
Master documents: add instructions regarding changing used templates
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:41:21 UTC
I am pleased to note that Outline Numbering changes are finally saved when the Master Document is saved so that they apply when the document is opened later. Unfortunately, Headers and Footers must be reentered every time a Master Document is loaded. When I reopen a MD, the Headers and Footers are blank -- every time.
Created attachment 7945 [details] Condition with custom Outline Numbers and Headers and Footers
Created attachment 7946 [details] After Saving and reopening -- loss of all custom headers and footers
The two attachments illustrate the problem. It seems to be related to the fact that a Master Document will never save cutom Outline Numbering -- it applies only to the current session. This has been a problem since 643c. However, the .png files also show that custom footer and header styles are also removed along with the content. A MD simply does not save anything other than the defaults. However, in any large document, there is a need for different types of headers and footers, so they should be saved (as should the Outline Numbering). I would appreciate it if this bug could be isolated and fixed.
I also made a mistake in saying that Outline Numbering is saved. I assigned Level 1 to one custom style and Level 2 to another so I could reference the correct Heading styles. These settings are not kept.
RC2. Headers and Footers are not only blank when a Master Document is reopened, they have also changed from the custom Book_Header and Book_Footer to Header and Footer. Changing them back leaves them empty so I have to reenter them every damn time I reopen the document. Since there are over 16 page styles in my largest document, this is a royal pain and I won't say where. That it remains unconfirmed apparently means that after two years of trying to get someone take a look at it and the recent filling of an issue, no one seems to know what to do about it.
This appears to be fixed in RC3, but I previously reported an apparent fix. I will reboot and test tomorrow and report back. If there are no problems with it, I would suggest it be changed to "Fixed".
Seems fixed in RC3.

Thank you guys for your good work.
Please reopen. This issue has reappeared in 1.1.1rc. I would call it a regression as it does NOT appear in 1.1.0. All header and footer content in the Master Document vanishes when saved and then reopened. If nothing is done with this, I will file a new issue for it.
I have no idea what happened. When first opening the MD, all header and footer content had vanished. I reinserted them then closed the document and OOo. I then restarted OOo and opened the document and the header and footer content was still there. I logged out and then back in -- same thing. It is still there. Apparently this is an intermittent problem.
I have changed this to an enhancement because I discovered the problem. To reproduce: Create a template for a master document and create a master document based on that template. Insert some text and at least one file based on the template. Now add headers and footers into the MD. Close everything. Reopen and your headers and footers are there. Now go into File > Templates > Edit and make some change (any change) in the template. Reopen the MD. It will point out that your template has changed and ask if you want to use the new values. Answer "yes." Result: headers and footers are now blank. Workaround: Set up a page definition in the template and insert the headers and footers into each page definition. Save the template. Reopen the MD and the headers and footers are there. Suggestion: Do one of two things: (A) Add instructions into the help files about incorporating headers and footers into the template. Advantage? They will remain there. Disadvantage? That particular template can be used for that particular document only and not for any other document. (B) Save headers and footers in the MD and protect them from changes when the template is changed. Advantage? They will remain there AND the template is usable for other documents. Disadvantage? Additional coding required. My preference is for (B), but I will accept (A). Please reopen as a request for enhancement.
reassigned to bh changed summary from "Saving a Master Document does not save Headers/Footers " to "Master documents: add instructions regarding changing used templates"
Excellent. I also found that defining the TOC format in the template resolves those issues as well. It would be nice if the MD kept them. To save the TOC without fouling up the document, it is helpful to delete the TOC after generating it. The settings are still kept, but the TOC is not on the template (yet the settings for the TOC are there).
At least that's a help. To summarize the issue, however At present, there is a workaround which is to assign all outline settings, headers and footers into the template and than use the template. That makes the template useless for any other document, which, as I noted, makes templates for Master Documents unusable for any other documents. Issue: I write for magazines and books and have several publishers. Each one requires a different template. The intention is to have one template for each publisher. Now I have to have a different template for each document, which, as i said, makes templates useless for Master Documents. For regular ".sxw" documents, outline numbering, the headers and the footers are saved in the document so it is not an issue. This fails in Master Documents. Expected: MD's should perform the same way as regular documents. Outline numbering and headers and footers should be saved when the MD is saved. Tested in 1.1.2rc.
Confirming as a new issue. rblackeagle, thank you for all the detail you've put into this issue. Can you try this in a newer development snapshot like 1.9.79 or later, and see if this issue still occurs for you?

Behavior has changed drastically from v. 1.x. Sometime around v. 2.0, templates and master docs were separated completely (the legend, "Template", no longer appears on the Properties dialog for a master doc). Styles in a master doc must be updated manually (copy or load styles); automatic update is not offered. Since I was a new user at 2.0, I assumed that that's how it's supposed to work. If not, it was a massive regression, and somebody should look into it. /tj
