Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 17571
Erroneous printing of envelopes vertically placed in printer trays
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:22:41 UTC
When an envelope is inserted into a text dokument and then sent to a printer and if an actual paper envelope is placed on its side (vertically) in the printer's tray the addressee and sender combo is printed as if the physical size of the paper was different than the selected envelope. It results in only part of the addresse field being printed the rightmost part is printed beyond the right margin of the physical envelope but it still fits inside the ("imaginary" from the OOWriter's point of view). If an envelope is placed horizontally in the tray and one of the three matching (horizontal) orientation options is selected in the Printer tab of the Envelope dialog window of the Insert menu then it prints corectly albeit more often then not results in a printer jam due to the small paper height (envelope width). Tested printers: HP LJ 6L with: - HP 6L driver - HP 4 Plus driver HP LJ 1200 on a print server (SMC 7008BR) with: - HP LJ 1200 PCL6 driver - HP LJ 1200 PostScript driver
I have similar problems with HP4L, with driver HP4L on Win98. Because word97 prints envelopes correct, I thing it is a deffect in OOo. Inserting an A4-sheet instead of C6, you can see, that the position of the print is completely wrong. Choosing envelope with the long edge touching left, I get a print with large margin ahead and then envelope touching right. So inserting a real C6-envelope, it will be empty. Choosing touching right, I get a print on the left side, but the large margin ahead occurs again. So in that case too, nothing is printed onto the envelope. Inserting envelopes horizontally is not possible with HP4L, they had to be inserted vertically on the left side.
Hi Regina, I have problems with my HP printers again and again, especially with printing for landscape format. Some times ago I had just the same problem as you described: my small format sheet was more or less empty, and a test with a A4 sheet showed that the printout was in a completely wrong area. The funny thing is that using one special driver, it works fine for several programs A, B, C and wrong (problem for example: printout with wrong orientation 180°,) for some others D, E, F. If I use another printer driver, it might run for Programs A, C, D, E and cause problems for B, F. I can not find any system. I also have those problems with MS- Programs (for example: WORKS 4.5a). IMHO it is more a HP printer driver problem than an OOo problem, but we must find a solution, so -> NEW. Andk, can you agree to a change in the subject to "problems with printout in landscape format", or do you have similar problems with envelopes in portrait format? Actually with my actual WIN XP driver I do not have any bigger problems (please see attached document "myprintouts.sxd". The only "problem" might be that aiming position for the sheet in the try is at the _bottom_ of the sheet for landscape printouts, what can cause some problems: - normally all distances are measured from "top left" of the sheet, not from the bottom. That causes problems for the printout if you select "A5", but your sheet has a little differing format like "C5" - If you print some pages landscape and some ones portrait, you will have to turn all landscape printed sheets for 180° before you can file them together with the portrait printed documents. Hi Rainer, such drawing is a good idea, i'll sent one too. I've now tested it in OOo1.1 and S07.0Patch1, the error is the same. The problem is not to alternate between portrait and landscape. If I set up the pagestyle "envelope" by myself, the printing is ok. But the autopilot generates a wrong pagestyle. Whether this happens because of ill printer-drivers from HP or because of a bug in the autopilot, should be solved by the developers. It seems to me, that the buttons, which indicate the position of the envelope in the tray, are exchanged or working like looking from the backside of the printer. The HP Laserjet 4L cannot handle envelopes feed into in landscape orientation.

Hi Regina, Some addition concerning my drawing: the "landscape result" shows how it looks, when I print an "Executive" envelope on an A4 sheet. Now I see, your drawings seem to show a problem something completely different from my oberservations. Might be that there is a relation "around several corners", I don't know. I never used the envelope function before and will have to do some tests to understand problems better. You have more experience, what do you think about a relation to issue 2081? I think that's the best "candidate". Rainer
Hi Rainer, I don't have more experience, but I think too, that issue 2081 describes the same wrong behaviour. But that issue is difficult to find, because "envelope" is not mentioned in the summary.
HI->OS: This issue is dublicate to your project but please take a look to the attachments.
I have similar problems with oo 1.1.1 windows XP and HP OfficeJet G85.
