Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 242
can we make the binaries in .bz2?
Last modified: 2003-12-06 14:52:32 UTC
Community request: Can we have the binaries in .bz2 compression as well? I think the easiest way to do this would be to install the .bz2 application on the openoffice.org server, and then when the files get uploaded, i can just do the .bz2'ing myself. Jeremy: can you coordinate getting the bz2 app on openoffice.org? Sander: does this makes sense to you?
Investigated with ops, and it turns out that .bz2 is installed on anoncvs.openoffice.org already. This means we are able to offer bzip files. So, we *can* offer bzip'd files. The question now is which ones should be bzip? Sander, you have any opinion? Perhaps all files over a certain size & popularity? I can also just ask folks on the list...

Perhaps we should start with the build to come, and add those files that the community wants. So, .bz2 the 614, plus any other file the community wants. Sander: any suggestions?-louis
Offering .bz2 for the binaries does not really make sense - the installation tarball is a tarball of individual zip compressed files, and the installation tarball actually grows compared to unpacked/gzip packed by ~ 2%. With 613 there was an alternative .bz2 source tarball and I think we will continue to provide it. The solver tarballs also compress relatively well with .bz2 so we might provide these aswell. As the (unix) solenv tarballs are going away starting with 614, there is nothing else to be .bz2-ed
Will coordinate with Sander to see about putting desired files on the site. Sander: Will you coordinate with me on this? How about we work on this next week, after the immediacy of the 614 build?-louis
sander, should we pursue this issue further? I've assigned it to you to retain or eliminate.
no, i think it should be closed.
As agreed on I will close these resolved fixed issues now. If you have trouble with that, please re-open the issue.
