When trying to load a large (2mb) powerpoint 98 file, it suddenly starts
gobbling up all ram (128mb) and all temp (another 130mb) untill they are
both taken up and then hangs.

in general that problem cannot be reproduced with each file. So it would help, 
if you could send us your doc as attachment, to analyse that performance-bug.
