Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 33234
importing bookmarks in heading footer from MS Word and exporting to MS Word lose bookmarks
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:27:51 UTC
When a MS word document containing bookmarks in header or footer is imported in Writer, and exported to MS Word, the bookmarks are lost. Bookmarks not in header and footer are not lost.

That's not fully true. When you open the exported doc again in OO Writer, the bookmarks are all available. Also, when you open the file in Word, all Bookmarks are listed in the "Insert.Bookmark" dialog. Word is just does not offer to jump to bookmarks in Header/Footer. You can verify this when creating such a doc in Word from the scratch: it is possible to set bookmarks in header, but not jump to these.

OK, you help me to understand better, things are more precise now : Yes, the bookmarks are still there via OpenOffice (I already knew that). But there is an inconstancy in MS Office : bookmarks, by name, have disappeared. Bookmarks, by location, seem to be still there...but we can not access to them, nor programmatically.
OK, some further details, now. 1- Via MS Office User interface : +in bookmark_in.doc (original MS Word doc) -when the active selection is in the body : in the bookmark dialog box, we have 4 bookmarks, sorted by name or by location (the radio button under the bookmark list). But the 'GoTo' button is grayed when a header or footer bookmark is selected in the list ("logical" behavior). -when the selection is in the header or footer (the header/footer are active), the 'GoTo' button is not grayed when a header/footer bookmark is selected in the list (again "logical" behavior), so we can go to that bookmark. +in bookmark_out.doc (OOo "saved as MS Word" doc) -when the active selection is in the body : in the bookmark dialog box, we have 4 bookmarks when sorted by location, but only 2 bookmarks when sorted by name. The 'Goto' button is grayed when a header or footer bookmark is selected, as before ("logical" behavior). -when the selection is in the header or footer : exactly same result as just before : there is no possibility to go to h/f bookmarks. It seems to me that something has changed in the conversion with OOo. 2- Programmatically : There are differencies when we try to browse bookmarks programmatically, with VBA and MS Office API. See following attachments, in the document 'ThisDocument' module : the same code in the two documents doesn't give the same result (see comments and run code in step by step mode), but the differencies are stranger...

MRU->MM: there seems to be a small difference in the way Writer and Word save Bookmars in header/footer to .doc format. This difference makes Writer's expoted bookmarks invisible in Word's Insert.Bookmark dialog, when listed "by name".
mmaher->flr: Your's methinks
We have other issues (issue 37422, issue 37422, issue 54988) concerning header Bookmarks. I suggest issue 54988 with the most general description should be processed first, because I believe, that other problems will be sollved with fix for issue 54988.
*** Issue 54986 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
