Description mmeeks 2004-10-11 21:08:07 UTC
So - I believe this really bites the ergonomics in impress - if you want your
bulleted point to begin with a lower case letter. Similarly, I think editing
cells in calc - it was (extremely difficult) to get a cell with a lower-case
letter to start with this turned on:

I too find this frustrating. It would be nice, if one purposely replaces the
first character of a cell with a lower case that it NOT autocapitalize.

target OfficeLater
Comment 3 kendy 2006-08-02 12:51:10 UTC
Any chance to re-consider it for 2.x, please?
Comment 4 mmeeks 2007-05-28 15:07:50 UTC
This is clearly a patch bug; changing type back.
Comment 5 Mathias_Bauer 2007-06-17 13:24:48 UTC
This issue is confusing.

The submitter talks about Impress. The first comment talked about Calc. Moreover
I think that the configuration setting will change this for Writer also.

This is something we must check first. I'm not sure if this is what we want to
have in Writer.
Comment 6 matthias.mueller-prove 2007-06-19 14:25:09 UTC
change scope of this task to Impress/only (and will create a new for Calc)
Comment 7 matthias.mueller-prove 2007-06-19 14:34:06 UTC
change subject
Comment 8 lutz.hoeger 2007-06-20 09:26:29 UTC
LH: Please try; start with comp. analysis; if easy we will do this for 2.3, else 2.4

Competitive Analysis
MS Powerpoint has the same default behavior as OOo Impress:
- Text and bullet points are capitalized after pressing space or return key
- Focus loss to other objects does not cause a capitalization
- Auto-capitalization can be undone.
- Auto-capitalization can be switched off
-- MS: Tools>AutoCorrect Options>Capitalize first letter of sentences
-- OOo: Tools>AutoCorrect>Options>Capitalize first letter of every sentence

Therefore I so no valid requirement to change OOo's behavior.

Hi Michael, do you agree? Then this issue can be closed.

> MS Powerpoint has the same default behavior as OOo Impress:

Well - I guess something changed in the text interaction to avoid the most
irritating parts of the auto-capitalization in Impress. However it's not as good
as MSO: they remember that an auto-correct was a failure - and never repeat it
for a given word :-) [ what you want ], whereas OO.o will repeatedly try to
re-apply that given a triggering edit.

OTOH - it's entirely likely that I just forgot the interaction that is
triggering the auto-capitalization irritation in impress.

So - lets change the title to 'calc' - there the effects are acutely obvious &
irritating:

The user scenario:
"User wishes to enter 'hello' in cell A1"
Excel: user types 'hello' -> fine.
Calc: user types 'hello' -> "Hello" - editing in the text entry has *no*
effect, user gets incredibly frustrated. [ but wait, yes - if they happen to
know to prepend the string with "'" then all is well ;-) - though that in itself
is perhaps inconsistent ].

Re-opening.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to turn off this feature for only Calc - hence
the patch: the ideal would be to realise that what you enter in a calc cell is
seldom/never a sentence & => not to do correction for calc at all.

reassign to mmp for review of michael's last comments.
Comment 13 matthias.mueller-prove 2007-09-06 16:36:26 UTC
Hi Micheal, please understand that changing subject and content and component of
an issue over time is very confusing. Please use one issue per task and stick to
the original purpose. I suppose that this is even no longer a PATCH. Thanks,
Matthias
Comment 14 ooo 2007-11-22 18:32:33 UTC
Please note that this was fixed for Calc in OOo2.3:
http://sc.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=features&msgNo=241
http://eis.services.openoffice.org/EIS2/cws.ShowCWS?Path=SRC680%2Ftl38
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=78661

So, if at all this is an issue for Impress only, and the patch would disable the
option for all applications, which is not what we want => changing type to
ENHANCEMENT. I suggest to either implement something Impress specific, similar
to what was done for Calc (see feature announcement mail mentioned above and
http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/autocorrect/AutoCorrect.odt spec), or close
this issue.
Comment 15 Martin Hollmichel 2008-06-06 15:04:39 UTC
