Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 35684
[Text Grid] Vertical alignment for different font sizes differ from MS Word
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
Here's what I did: - I wrote a document in Word 2000 on a computer with Chinese Windows ME (and Chinese MS Office); it has a single line of text, and I selected a part of it and changed the font size; all text is vertically aligned at the baseline (I think) - I copied the file to this computer (English Windows XP Home, OpenOffice 1.1.2 and later upgraded to 1.1.3) and opened it; the text is now aligned to the top - I tried selecting the text and changing the Format:Paragraph:Alignment:Text-to-text setting but it had no effect - if I save the file (in either Word or OO format) and open it again, the problem remains - if I create the same document from scratch in OO, the alignment is good, and the Text-to-text setting has the expected effect

MRU->SBA: the Asian layout grid is active here and behaves a bit differently to MS Word's.
SBA->FME: The "big" letters look as if their baseline is shifted downwards. This can be seen when the grid lines are visible. This even leads to cropped "big" letters at the bottom of a page. Can be seen when putting dummy text in 24 pt on a page with 10 grid lines). Adjusted summary, prio set to P4.
FME->SBA: This works as designed. The text is always vertically centered in grid layout mode. Changing our behaviour would require a specification, compatibility flag, ...
SBA: Type changred to "Feature". Target set to OOo Later. SBA->FT: Please take over. Given the fact that Words grid concept does NOT look like the greatest a human being can imagine, we have to think carefully what behavior to implement...
Quoting: Old value |New value DEFECT |FEATURE LOL, are you guys working at Microsoft? I find OpenOffice quite UNUSABLE with Word documents, because of several "features" like this one, that have no solution and apparently no workaround except perhaps creating a new document and rewriting the whole thing. I'm not sure if it's all because of the Asian layout thing or not, but all this hassle almost makes me want to just go to a shop and buy MS Word.
If "FEATURE" actually means "feature request", then I apologize for my previous comment.
FT: Re-assigned to default requirement owner
