Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 35752
Option to make line text in connectors parallel with the line
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:38:53 UTC
It would be useful to have an option in connectors to make the line-text go parallel with the line the same way that in regular lines and arrows. It would also be nice that the text would automaticly allways flow from left to righ so that the text would never be upside-down when rotating the line. Even if ( end x-coordinate ) < ( start x-coordinate) .

same comment as in issue 40580: For getting text parallel to connector there is a workaround. You can apply the old fontwork property "rotate" to the connector. Then the text will follow the line direction and you can set a distance from line to text in the fontwork dialog. (In 2.0 you must customize your toolbar/menu to get the old fontwork.)
This would be a great feature. I just used OODraw for live mind mapping in a conference with about 80 people in the room. It was perfect, except that the text overlapped, and since it didn't follow the line, it wasn't really possible to tell what text belonged to which connector. Ideally, text would be centred at the midpoint of the line (NOT the centre of the connector, which is directly between the endpoints, and sometimes nowhere near the line), and follow the direction of the line at the midpoint.
AW: You can do that using the Fontwork (not the new one for Customshapes, but the basic one). To access it, You need to add the button to a toolbar. Choose 'Customize Toolbar...' in the menu at the end of any Toolbar, then in the Dialog add from Category 'Format' the 'Fontwork' Icon. Select Your Connector (works with all paht-based objects,. BTW), click Fontwork button. In the (pretty old) dialog, do NOT click on one of the provided exaples above, but activate Fontwork using 'Rotate' in the Fontwork-Mode line. Play around, all is possible there. Even fancy shadows, etc...
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".

Nice to see this issue getting some attention after a while. I have used the workaround that AW has suggested and it works pretty well, but if you have multiple lines of text, only the first row is visible with this option enabled. Still, if this feature already exists in the code base, it is shame that so useful feature is so well hidden from the ordinary users. I think more people would use it if this setting could be integrated to the regular "Format" -> "Text" dialog, where you already can set position of the text ancor. Also, it would be useful if the orientation option could be made automatic.
