I briefly installed 609 and I recall investigating the output of open office as
a Writer 6.0 file format.  I could XML in clear text.  Now with 614, the same
procedure seems to give me, I'm guessing here, a parsed binary tree, not text.
Has this behavior changed?  Where would I read about such things.  I seem to not
be able to find much documentation.

Chris,

we have finally introduced packages in the 614 version. The files are now 
ordinary ZIP packages, and any unzip tool will let you extract a 
file 'Content.xml' that contains the XML content as you expect it.

Packages are needed to handle binary content. Discussion of the where and why 
can be found in the archives of the discuss@openoffice.org and 
dev@xml.openoffice.org mailing lists.
