Create a new blank presentation.

use Format->Page and select "Portrait"

OpenOffice changed the alignment of the white page to portrait
but does not use different slide layouts resulting in the areas
available going off the page.

Neither do the options of slide layouts available under slide design or slide 
layout change to offer portrait designs.

In Adition: After changing from landscape to portrait one can exchange the 
background page (under slide design) but deleting unused backgrounds has no 
effect.

The mentioned bugs do no more occure in an actual version (yet internal 
available).
