I click on Insert: Special Characters
The background is always white, while the special characters font colour depends on
Tools: Options: OpenOffice.org: Appearance: Font Color
which may result in hardly unreadable yellow font on white backgroung.
See screenshot below.
Background colour should also depend on chosen "Appearance".
