Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 7223
Password protected sheets/document loose their passwords after exporting to SO5.2, 4.0, 3.0
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:55:29 UTC
Protected sheets or document with a password will loose the pasword when you save the document in previous StarOffice formats. The passwords are removed so the user can unprotect the sheets. This happens with protected sheets and with protected documents. OpenOffice 1.0.0 also exhibits this behaviour. How to reproduce the problem: - Create an empty spreadsheet and protect one or more sheets. Enter a password. - Save the document as a StarCalc 5.0, 4.0, 3.0 - Open the saved document. Unprotect the sheet/s previously protected --> No password needed !!! - Instead protecting a sheet, protect the document. The same behaviour occurs. Isma.
Thanks for posting this issue Ismael. Duplicated on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OO 1.0.1. Does the older version of StarOffice support the password protection features offered in OO 1.0.1? Unfortunately I don't have copies of the older versions of StarOffice.
Yes, StarOffice 5.x has this capabilities. To clarify: StarOffice 5.x --> OOo * Password protection works as expected OOo --> StarOffice 5.x * Password lost, protection still works Isma.

Hi Falko, one Issue that needs some clarrification from you. Frank
I just want to add a comment about 7224. I marked it as a duplicate of this issue because it's a password related issue. Please note that issue 7224 deals with password protecting Writer documents, not Calc worksheets.
Well, this seems a bug to me. We need to fix this IMHO.
The mechanism for sheet or document protection passwords was changed between the 5.0 and 6.0 (OOo 1.0) file formats. Therefore we cannot save a file to 5.0 format with the passwords. 5.0 and earlier formats are treated like other alien formats which don't contain all information (for example, MS Excel format). Note that this is different from saving a file with a password.
closing the issue.
> ... we cannot save a file to 5.0 format with the passwords. :( I think it will be a good idea to say this somewhere in the documentation, readme or release notes because this breaks the security of the documents without warning the user, wich believes that the document or the sheets will be protected as before but in fact, it will not and everybody will have access to previously protected sheets. > ... 5.0 and earlier formats are treated like other alien formats I'm sorry, but this is a very bad thing IMHO. :(( One thing is not being able to export new features to older formats and another is not being able to restore the same features we can import from our older file formats. With regards, Isma.
