I'm sorry but I think that this feature is lacking in intuition and that the
documentation is not very clear on its use. I find the solution used in Word
much easier where the current style is indicated in a tool bar at the top rather
than a floating window that does not appear to have any effect on the text that
is marked.

Reassigned to Bettina.

Please change platform to all. I think that the summary should be
changed to something like "find alternative to paragraph styles
floating window".

I think that the documentation problem should go into a fresh bug,
especially since the documentation on the current set-up has a chance
of being revamped long before the styles ui gets rethunk. I have not
looked at the styles documentation. Please mention in your bug what
specific improvements could be made to make it clearer and more useful.

OK I found out only by trial and error that to apply paragraph styles
you need to select the style then press fill format mode then click on
the text, only after this I found buried in the documentation the way
it should work:
Floating Toolbar
By single-clicking several icons you open floating toolbars. These are
menu windows containing commands you can choose from. Click and hold
down the mouse button on the title bar and drag it away from the
object bar. As soon as you release the mouse button the floating
toolbar remains at the new position. You can then click on the title
bar and drag the toolbar to another position, or close it by clicking
the Close Window symbol.

OK now I now, but I would not have thought of looking under floating
toolbar to find out how to apply a style.

As to how it should work I'm afraid you need to look at how it is done
in a closed source system as it seems to me this function is more
intuitively implemented elsewhere. I can't really fault the
documentation until the functionality is simplified.
