Description t_morley 2002-11-21 15:08:10 UTC
I've always lamented the lack of an audible signal to replace/complement the red squiggly
underline for typos. It's an enormous bonus when copy-typing, i.e. speed-typing something
written on paper, because it saves having to break ones attention from the written page.

It
existed in Inter-Word on the BBC Micro in 1985 and afterwards on the Archimedes, but I've never
found out how to do it in Word. Thus far OpenOffice.org can't help me either -- could somebody add a
putchar(7) in the relevant place and make me happy?

I strongly believe that this "Beep" would confuse most users,
especially because it is clearly visible where the typos are (red
underline) and when cross-reading them all one can easily spot the
places where it was inded a typo from those where, say, an abbreviaton
or Name was unknown to the dictionary. Perhaps that's why most Word
processors cut this feature.

Especially concerning accessibility, It still makes sense as an
option, I agree.

Please consider this: By counting the options that were already
implemented one can estimate the price (an overwhelming amount of
options) that ALL users pay (a lack of overview) in order to serve
SOME users needs/habits. Thus we tend to avoid more options...

Fair enough, in that I can understand the resistance to hundreds and
hundreds of options. Accusations of "bloatware" and "unusable UI"
would abound.

However (not yet giving up on an idea held dear for years), what about
an Accessibility section under Tools-->Options, where "minority"
features like this could all live together? It might end up being a
long list of comparatively little-used features, but they would all be
together under one heading, out of Joe Average's way, and would make
the minority of users who do need/like them *very* happy.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".

Rechecking this in Apache OpenOffice. This new feature would still be nice to have, i.e. as something that can be enabled through the options.
