Description issues@www 2000-11-08 09:26:51 UTC
StarOffice crashes at 99% of installation/OpenOffice crashes while registering
the components.

Seemed to be a StarOffice problem since 5.0 versions. Sun first said, the
problem could not be found but was solved with the 5.0a version. Not true.
Always and still a problem with our ATI graphics boards (2 pcs).

Hi Alexander,
it's not a problem with the graphic device but with the driver. Is it possible
to change to vga mode and install OpenOffice? YES: there's a problem with the
driver. NO: we have to look for different problems on your computer because
we've had no problems installing OpenOffice.
Comment 2 issues@www 2000-11-13 13:23:29 UTC
Install in VGA Mode: didnt change anything. Tried to copy the installation from
another machine and then tried to repair the installation. Same error at the
same point, Setup wasnt able to register the components.

We exchanged the graphics board (TNT2). Problem still persisted. Did the same
things, like starting in protected mode, VGA configuration, and so on. Problem
ist still there. Now we do have the old graphics board reinstalled (why waste
money?).

Any other ideas? Would be really appreciated

Alex, sorry for the inconvenience. I'm still not sure that this is a graphic
card problem and your observations seem to support that. As you might have
realized many people had the same crash at the end of the installation of 613,
not matter which OS they used. We hope that we have fixed this issue in 614
which is coming soon. It would be great if you could try again with the 614 and
tell us, if your problem still occurs.
Thanks for your patience.

As mentioned above we do have major problems installing star office on two
machines.

Tried the installation again with 614. Same behaviour. Installation runs till
"registration of components", after this setup crashes.

Thanks
Alex

I've got a hint from a friend using staroffice5.2 on a w2k machine. he simply
installed it o a win9x box, then made a copy of the installed dir and reused it
on the w2k system.
it works but the following problem: i don't know what exactly is done through
the installation process but my friend reported me that with this "copy"-method
no winword documents can be saved - the save process fails in some way.
i tried his copy of staroffice5.2 and it works, i can even save winword
documents. maybe it works for me because i already had some "failed"
installation of staroffice and openoffice on my computer and therefore also had
the needed files normally not found in the default staroffice directory.

wouldn't it be possible make openoffice install like the old-fashioned programs
did? with ini-files and in only one directory, keeping the whole stuff that
belongs to openoffice in it's home-directory? that would really make new
installations easier.

I repost this in the issue 228 if somebody doesn't know 111...

Crash while registering still persists even with the new release 619.
Now even the machine that registered fine in the past crashes.

Take a look at:

same error on build619, still crashes on registering components.
after telling me that something couldn't be registered i choosed IGNORE but
then OpenOffice crashed with the same drwatson error as before. :(

Exactly the same thing happened to me with StarOffice 5.1 & 5.2, and with all
OpenOffice builds until 619. I haven't tried build 625, but with 627 the setup
does not crash at the end, but at the very beginning. The error message says:

'The instruction at "0x1c60a359" has referred to the memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read".' (Translated from Italian).

I am running Win2k SP1 on a Pentium III w/ 256 MB RAM and I have 17GB of free
disk space.

aisotton: now I have the same problem as you with all builds after 619. It
crashes at the very beginning with the same error (a small standard windows
box). I'm running Windows2000 with no service pack installed on the same
machine as before, but I have installed Windows2000 a second time since the
last posting so this one is a new installation but I still get the error.
I haven't heard anything from the OpenOffice/Sun people for a while so I don't
know if they forgot this problem or if they simply can't find the error.

We can't reproduce this problem evén not in OOo638. We don't see a problem in OOo/StarOffice. It's not that we are not willing to fix bugs but we don't see this as our problem, we assume the problem on
your computer.

Works for me.
