Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24445
Can't put caption above an illustration
Last modified: 2013-11-21 12:10:47 UTC
When adding a caption to an illustration (drawing object or group of drawing objects), the "position" field is greyed out, and set to "below". There seems to be no way to put a caption ABOVE an illustration.
Please attach a sample to see such object for the caption.
To reproduce: - put a drawing object in a document - select the drawing object, right-click and select "Caption" - Notice that the "Position" drop-down is greyed out, and set to below, so the caption can only be placed below, not above. (see attached screen capture)

confirmed on SO5.2, OOo1.0.3, OOo1.1.0, OOo1.1.1b and 680m23 :) as requested by os reassigned to os
please also have a look at issue 26414 (request to be able to place the caption to the right/left of an object). If you want to handle both in one single issue please mark the other one as duplicate (and update the summary :-) - thank you.
.
A work-around is to go to the Text Document: General section of the Options, click on the ... button next to Object selection, and then change the "default" settings for illustration to "above." I agree that it is a serious usability bug that one cannot override the default position when entering a new caption. The platform/OS should be all because this bug is present on Mac OS X, too.
Caption above is currently not implemented for drawing and pictures.
cc myself.
I would like to be able to put captions to the side (left or right).
Created attachment 81972 [details] Patch to enable the option in the dialogs This patch and the patch in attachment 81756 [details] allow inserting the caption "Above"; but enabling it shows some problems (the frame hight is smaller than the graphic's hight), so this needs further work.
