Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 3734
formula reference
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:34:19 UTC
There seems to be no quick method of properly referencing an equation (the type of reference you will find in any physics book or paper). What would be nice to have is a button or right-click menu item to quickly reference and equation with a self-incrementing number right-justified (and the equation centered). The only two programs I have seen so far that accomplish this well are WordPerfect and the full version of MathType. It would make my life much easier if OO included this type of enhancement.

There is a quick method which doesn't seem to be well documented. A quote from users faq which explains this follows. However, this is still worth a RFE: Add an option to the GUI (e.g. context menue of a formula object) for having the equation numbered. === quote from user faq: === How do I number my equations? Displayed equations in Writer documents can be numbered using a predefined AutoText: Type fn at the beginning of a paragraph and press F3. This will insert an AutoText containing a dummy formula and a sequence number. Now doubleclick the formula to edit it. If you want to number the equations by chapter you should * Doubleclick on one of the equation numbers. * In the listbox 'Level' choose the chapter level you want to number by. * In the textbox 'Separator' type a character to separate the chapter number from the formula number. If you want to modify the AutoText you should use the dialogue Edit-AutoText. You will find this AutoText in the group Standard. === end quote ===
The quick method to introduce equation numbering does not look like it would be "the nice way" - why i figure numbering not treated like a caption. If OOo would implement captions that can be placed on top, right, bottom or left the problem could be easily resolved by automatic or manual "captioning" of formulae. Using a table (as it is done by the fn + <F3> rather seems to be a workaround. On the other hand the caption framing is somehow messy to. So my suggestion is the following: 1) Captions should be frames with a table inside, where the content is placed in a separate cell like the caption is. 2) rightclicking the captions frame should trigger a "format caption" menu with an option to change the position, to fix it relative to the surrounding page/frame or to remove the caption at all. 3) A caption style would help to keep this settings constant all over the document.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
