Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 29671
wrong 'word count' when recording changes
Last modified: 2014-04-14 19:25:14 UTC
The 'number of words' statistic (File->Properties->Statistics) of a document is, in my opinion, counting the wrong amount of words if the changes to the document are recorded (Edit->Changes->Record). If a word is deleted it is still gets accounted to the 'number of words'. Well it is, in a special way, still there, but I got totally confused when I turned off the 'Show Changes' option (Edit->Changes->Show). I think there should be at least a second value that displays the number of words as if all changes were accepted.

I think the issue type should be "defect", not "enhancement" because the function does not do what users expect. Can somebody confirm the issue? It is easy to verify. Also I think it is high time somebody would get to work on this issue. When it was filed, the word count was just a number in File - Properties - tab Statistics. In current versions it is prominently featured as the menu option Tools - Word Count. So its importance is recognized, now it should also work correctly. Thanks,
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
This word count issue is perplexing. Here's my scenario. I run OpenOffice 4.01 on both my laptop and my desktop. I e-mail my .doc file back and forth between the two computers. The word count is different every time and not by just some trivial amount. Example 1: Total document count. Laptop amount (I typed this into the document before sending): 35,101 words Desktop amount (when I went to verify that number): 34,324 words Somehow almost 1,000 words just disappeared in the count... but they are all right there in the document. Example 2: Selection word count. Laptop amount (I measured this from just the most recent chapter of that same document, which I'm still writing): 1,011 words Desktop amount (when I went to verify that number): 983 words So, what gives? If this thing can't give me accurate word counts, it's a worthless feature. And frankly, this is one of my most-used features of the program.
Can not reproduce description. Word count behaves as if changes were accepted (i.e. deleted words are not counted). IMHO word count should assume changes are not accepted. Best behavior: both word count for accepted changes: none, and word count for accepted changes: all AOO410m17(Build:9763) - Rev. 1586584 2014-04-11 09:13 - Linux x86_64 Debian
