Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 53425
more flexibility in the grid layout
Last modified: 2021-01-09 14:14:07 UTC
1. Many users want to specify a page style with 40 characters per line and 40 lines per page. Current implementation does not allow users to do that because of the constraint among "Lines per page", "Characters per line", and "Max. base text size" in the tab "Text Grid" of the "Page style" dialog window. 2. A page style with 40 characters per line and 20 lines per page looks inappropriate. There seems no way to change line space. Line spaces could be expanded to fill entire page with given amount of lines. Both 40x40 and 40x20 page styles are commonly used for writing draft of Japanese essay, article, paper, and so on.
Reassigned to FT.
FT: Thanks Tora. Nice to see you are still with this project! Anyway I must retarget this issue to Office Later.
Request Could you consider to disable the constraint among - Lines per page - Characters per line - Max. base text size in the nearest OOo / SS release? Background Documents prepared with Microsoft Word sometime have a set of "Lines per page" and "Characters per line" whose values are not allowed by the constraint of current OOo. Regardless of the constraint, the document appears properly in the recent 680m builds, thanks to the big improvement in the Word importer. Once a user, however, touch the values in the "Text Grid" dialog window, the values will be forcefully changed and are started to be limited within the constraint, and thus layout of the document becomes broken and will never be back. The constraint seems to be applied only in the "Text Grid" dialog window. Therefore, it would be easy to disable it and we would instantly get better functionality. thanks, Tora
FT: I'm leaving so I will re-assign this issue to requirement default user
Please do not underestimate this request. This issue might be worth more than priority P2 because users could not achieve their desired layout. Detailed requirements from user's point of view will be attached in a several weeks. Raised priority back from P5 to P3.
Text grid layout is enhanced. Both 40x40 and 40x20 page styles are supported. Please verify it in the cws cjksp1. Thanks! Fong.
An experimental patch for this issue has been created. Could you evaluate it? I was wondering if this patch would bring users a good user experience with Writer. User Scenario: A junior high school student got an assignment to submit a report in a certain format of grid layout in the size of 20 characters per line and 20 lines per page. With current OpenOffice.org Writer, the student might find some difficulties to create such a format under the dialog of Format - Page - Grid Layout. What the patch attempts to solve: The patch allows users to easily specify a format of a grid layout by simply filling the number of characters and lines. The function that comes with the patch will automatically calculate appropriate values of both base text and ruby text sizes. It is quite easier than before. Specifications: There are four values that users can specify, which are related each other under a certain constraint. The two values - the number of lines per page and the number of characters per line - should be treated as a user's command. The machine should not change the given values as possible as it can. The patch is designed to work in that way. Although the constraints might need to change some of the values, that will be done as a last resort.
Created attachment 51151 [details] An experimental patch
Created attachment 51152 [details] Some snapshots of the sample document 53425.odt
Created attachment 51153 [details] A sample document that includes 20x20 and 40x20 grid layouts.
Set as PATCH type I don't if this will could be apply with recent builds. A developer can have a look.
