Description Unknown 2002-05-29 10:23:30 UTC
Can't open Password Protected Files From Microsoft Office 97 (professional
edition). Attempted to open both Excel and Word files.

I get "error loading document file "(file name)"
Read-Error. Password protected files are not supported.
Comment 1 andreas.schluens 2002-05-30 07:14:33 UTC
If somewhere knows how MS encrypt here files - we can implement such
feature!
Comment 3 ooo 2002-05-31 09:14:32 UTC
not an API definition issue
Comment 4 caolanm 2002-05-31 11:13:07 UTC
cmc->as: You might as well own this to consider the feature request.
Comment 5 andreas.schluens 2002-05-31 11:35:13 UTC
as->gw: I think it`s part of our product management to clearify the legal part of this
bug.

Why is this tied to word-processor? This isn't Writer-specific, is it?
However, I don't dare change the component, because I am not sure of
what to set this to.

cmc->ft: Any change on the ARC4/RC4 issues ?
Comment 19 con.hennessy 2003-09-10 21:22:31 UTC
Any chance of getting a legal statement on this ?
Is there really a legal problem with this kind of feature ?
Besides a lack of VBA, this is the feature seen as most requested ( or at
least lots of requests on the users list ).
Comment 20 falko.tesch 2003-10-17 07:25:15 UTC
Due to legal restrictions and unclarity in this area we must postpone
this issue to Office Later.
Comment 21 davidfraser 2003-10-17 07:55:31 UTC
Does postponing it mean that patches should not be posted here, or
merely that they will not be accepted until the issues have been resolved?
A patch would mean if people are desparate they could build their own
OpenOffice.org with support for this
Comment 22 falko.tesch 2003-11-04 16:08:09 UTC
FT->ST: Can you please answer the last statement from David Fraser?

In my opinion:
If the legal status is not yet clear, maybe better who make/release the part
is not using OOo/SO/Sun name. it is much safer.
so, if somebody have knowledge about this, can share or work for this, but
maybe will not be implemented in OOo by default, until the legal status clear.
or user can implement it by them self. This is safe for OOo and Sun.
the patch/component can be shared using internet, maybe in free servers, or
somewhere else.

Comment 25 andreschnabel 2004-01-06 11:00:22 UTC
Andre->David:
Postponig means, that this Issue is accepted, but no one of the current
developers (at SUN) can take care about it for the next milestones. It is
considered to be implemented after 2.0.
Anyway if a developer (we currently don't know) submits a patch, that is
generally working and legaly OK, it will be implemented.

Word and excel decryption of office97 and 95 is implemented in workspace
encryption. Will be in 680 series eventually.

I don't know what "workspace encryption" is but I'm sure this is a good thing,
so thanks! :-)

Just for clarification: Office 2000 uses the same format as Office 97, so this
should also work with Of2k files, right?
Comment 34 daniel.rentz 2004-06-04 16:49:44 UTC
Yes, it will work with MSO 5, 95, 97, 2000, XP, and 2003 filers. And even with
Excel 2.1, 3.0 and 4.0 files...

"workspace encryption" means the childworkspace with the name "encryption".
Anyway, it is developer stuff :-)
Comment 35 immanuelcrc 2004-06-09 15:00:28 UTC
Why is this still in word processor? I affects almost all the components,
doesn't it?
Comment 36 daniel.rentz 2004-06-09 16:00:00 UTC
Changed component to framework (there's nothing better).
Comment 37 daniel.rentz 2004-07-17 20:48:11 UTC
fixed in src680/encryption (for OOo 2.0)

Loading of protected MS Word and MS Excel will be possible.

What about saving with password? I tried to migrate a company, but they needed
MS encription-decription...
Comment 42 daniel.rentz 2004-07-27 13:37:31 UTC
DR->EZH: Sorry, no encryption on saving for OOo 2.0...
Comment 43 ezh 2004-07-27 13:42:42 UTC
Should I fill a new bug for encription?
Comment 44 daniel.rentz 2004-07-27 16:09:24 UTC
DR->EZH: Yes, you may write a new issue, target would be 'OOo Later'. Thanks
