Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 6796
Calc does not retain automatic line breaks when loading Excel format
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:55:29 UTC
Calc does not retain automatic line breaks on any row without data when loading the saved document from xls format. Steps to reproduce: 1. Set automatic line breaks on an entire column by selecting the column and applying the line break formatting (Format | Cells | Line Breaks). 2. Add data in the column for some rows to verify the auto line breaking is working. 3. Save the document in Excel format. 4. Reload the document. 5. Examine the line break properties of the column. The rows that had data populated retained it on the column; none of the others do. If you load the document using Excel itself, it has the line break formatting retained on all rows of the column.
More testing... if MS Excel sets the auto row break formatting and OO then loads the document, it retains the formatting even on empty cells. Once OO saves the document in Excel format, the auto row break formatting is lost on any cell without data. If OO saves the document in its native format, it retains the formatting appropriately.
It's a known limitation of the Excel export filter. It exports all cells up to the last used row, but no default column formatting. (Example: If you have empty cells in row 1 and 3 with line break, and a filled cell anywhere in row 2, the cell in row 1 will be exported correctly). *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 194 ***
