Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 9955
Excel password protected file
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:55:29 UTC
I got from one of my coleagues who uses Ms Excel a file which has some cells password protected. The spreadsheet application reports me that the file cannot be oppened. The message is as follows: 'Error loading document file:///C:/...: Read-Error. The file is password-protected.' I know that password protected files cannot be oppened in Calc but, I don't want to modify those cells. It is not possible to open that file as Ms Excel does without asking for a password? Thank you for your time. Cristian Samoila (ristossi@yahoo.co.uk) P.S. If it's necesary I can provide the file.
Hi Christian, as you stated the file has some cells protected by password. This leads the whole document to be encrypted, at least in parts. So we cannot open the document to display all of the content properly. Also the encryption routine is a secret of Microsoft and they won't provide us with it. So I set this one as double to Issue 402 and close it. Sorry for no better reply. Frank *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 402 ***

The error box is misleading, the file is encrypted, not password protected.
