Even if I possess the password for an Excel spreadsheet, OpenOffice will not 
allow me to open the file - it states it is password protected but does not 
open the file.

As the person who reported this to me said "That's not very Microsoft 
compatible..."

Password protected files from Excel are crypted, so OpenOffice Calc can't open
them without knowing the algorythm (and thats a secret by MS) => not fixable
